A Closer Look

Dock and piling planning that starts below the decking

A dock is more than its walking surface. Pilings, connections, bracing, framing, access and exposure all influence the repair or replacement scope.

Dock construction and renovation

New or rebuilt dock layouts may require evaluation of use, access, decking materials, framing, tie-in details, permitting and long-term maintenance.

Piling inspection and replacement

Visible cracking, corrosion, deterioration, movement or weakened connections can affect a dock’s stability. Repair versus replacement depends on the piling type and structural findings.

Hardware, cleats and connections

Marine exposure can loosen or corrode bolts, brackets, cleats and fasteners. Appropriate inspection and replacement specifications depend on loads, materials and the existing installation.

Our Process

How We Work

A clear, documented process—from the first conversation to completed service.

01

Consultation & Site Review

We discuss your needs and review the waterfront property and relevant conditions.

02

Written Scope & Recommendations

We outline the proposed work, priorities and recommended next steps.

03

Coordinated Work

We arrange the agreed work around access, conditions and qualified trades as required.

04

Photos & Written Documentation

We document the completed service with relevant photographs and a written summary.

Engineering, permitting, specialized testing and other regulated work are separately scoped when required.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to replace the whole dock?

Not always. Localized repairs may be possible when the supporting structure remains suitable; a condition review determines the scope.

Can deteriorated pilings be repaired?

Some can be rehabilitated; others need replacement. Material, accessibility, deterioration and engineering govern the recommendation.

Will dock construction require a permit?

Permits or environmental authorizations may apply. Requirements depend on jurisdiction, location and the work proposed.

Timber Piling Solutions

Wooden Piling Protection, Rehabilitation & Replacement

Saltwater exposure and marine borers can damage the timber that supports a dock, sometimes below the waterline where problems are less visible. We evaluate the condition, access and structural requirements before recommending protection, rehabilitation or replacement.

Protective Piling Wrapping

Install suitable marine-grade protective wraps around sound timber pilings to help reduce exposure to marine borers. Wrapping is primarily a preventive measure: it does not replace lost wood or restore a weakened piling's load capacity.

Concrete Jackets & Encasement

Concrete-filled jackets or other specified encapsulation systems may be an option for selected deteriorated pilings. Where the jacket must provide structural strength, the repair design, reinforcement, connections and installation methods require qualified engineering.

Structural Rehabilitation

Depending on the damage, engineered solutions may include reinforcement, structural collars, supplemental pilings or other approved repairs. A reliable load path and sound remaining structure are essential.

Removal & Replacement

When a piling is severely damaged, unstable or unsuitable for rehabilitation, we can scope removal and replacement, including related framing and dock connections.

Dock Guardrails & Accessories

Installation and replacement of guardrails, handrails, ladders, cleats, bumpers, rub rails and related dock accessories, selected for intended use, attachment conditions and applicable requirements.

Coordinated Delivery

CoastalCore Marine performs suitable, accessible work directly and coordinates qualified specialty contractors for projects involving difficult access, diving, complex equipment or specialty methods. Engineering and permitting are addressed when required.

Repair versus replace: Surface appearance alone cannot establish a piling's remaining strength. Underwater condition, timber loss, movement, embedment, connections and loads may require specialist evaluation. Repair recommendations follow the actual findings.

Know What to Look For

Signs Your Dock or Pilings May Need Attention

Early attention may help identify manageable problems before they affect the broader dock structure.

Unusual Movement or Leaning

A dock that shifts, tilts or feels less stable than before warrants a closer structural assessment.

Splits, Soft Wood or Hollow Sections

Timber deterioration can extend below the waterline. Marine borer activity may not be apparent from above.

Loose Framing & Corroded Connections

Bolts, brackets, bracing and other connections can loosen or deteriorate under marine exposure and repeated loading.

Damaged Wraps & Exposed Timber

Torn or detached protection can leave pilings vulnerable; damaged wraps should be inspected rather than simply covered over.

These signs do not establish a diagnosis. A site review and, when needed, underwater or structural evaluation help determine suitable next steps.
